Paper Record
Date:
Spring 2008
Concept:
Textual translation of Christian Marclay's "Recycled Record". Create a playable 45 rpm record out of the language from a book, in this case, James Joyce's Ulysses.
Execution:
Pulped James Joyce's Ulysses and made it into paper. I then laser cut the shape and spiral of a 45 rpm record into a piece of Plexiglas. I used this die as a master record on an etching press to emboss the handmade paper with a record spiral. The resulting paper record is playable little more than once on a record player.
